Headlines get peoples attention.
They get people more interested in what's to come in the content.
Headlines incorporated in to a web page are preferred by search engines AND more importantyly your website visitors.
My own idea is to imagine your user is standing in front of your news stand (in effect your website). You have to attract their attention with original headlines from a distance and once you have hooked them you then use sub headlines and original content to keep them scanning your pages.
Tabloid newspapers use of headlines are worth analysing as they are designed to attract attention from potential purchasers. Even if the newspaper is not sold, if the headline leaves an imprint in the mind of the viewer then its likely that particular tabloid's brand will be remembered.
If the paper is not bought it is still highly likely to be discussed with co-workers, friends or family so increasing the power of their brand. Something I believe the UK's Sun newspaper does very well.
Think about it...
...how many people say "Did you see X in the (insert tabloid) paper this morning??? "
They might not have bought it, but they remembered it and then brought it up with others. That shows the power of creative headlines. And you can use a similar concept to get your website visitors attention quickly and then keep them on the page.
The way to do this is to run a test and monitor your web statistics for the average duration of time on a page or on your website as a whole without headlines in your pages content.
Then insert CREATIVE headlines and subheadlines and note if the time on site CHANGES.
If it does there are maybe 2 reasons, one your document has become far easier to quickly scan or people quickly scan your headlines and then carefully return to choice paragraphs to read your content so increasing the time on your pages.
Overall the result you are looking for is that the search engines note your use of creative headlines and leads to an increase in your sites ranking, but more importantly you want to generate visitors attention on the page long enough to create the desire for them to want to buy from you.
