The question as to whether AI will replace the role of copywriters has sparked a lot of interest over the past year or two with the surge of effective AI tools like ChatGPT or Perplexity AI.
As digital marketers, copywriting is an important part of our job, even if it’s not our primary role; We do find ourselves wondering “when will AI completely replace our need to write copy for clients?”
While AI has advanced significantly and offers many benefits to marketers and content creators, our team feels it lacks the sophistication to completely replace the human touch essential for quality content.
Read on to explore the advantages and disadvantages of AI content writing, as well as some of the ways it can definitely be used to benefit your copywriting.
What is AI Copywriting?
For the purposes of this blog post I thought, let’s ask ChatGPT to write something for me. As you can see in the video below, I asked ChatGPT to write a short paragraph explaining what AI copywriting is? And this is what is produced:
AI copywriting refers to the use of artificial intelligence technologies to generate written content, such as marketing copy, blog posts, social media updates, and more. By leveraging algorithms and natural language processing, AI tools can analyze data, understand context, and create compelling text that resonates with target audiences. This innovative approach not only enhances efficiency and productivity for businesses but also allows for personalization and scalability in content creation, making it an increasingly popular solution in the digital marketing landscape.
From my point of view this accurately explains what AI copywriting is and as you can see it took a matter of seconds to generate saving me time writing something very similar.
However, there are some changes I would make to this paragraph before utilising it in my own content. This is how I would change it:
AI copywriting refers to the use of artificial intelligence technologies to generate written content, such as:
- website content
- blog posts
- marketing collateral
- social media posts, and more.
AI leverages algorithms and natural language processing to analyse data, understand context and create compelling text that resonates with your target audiences.
AI copywriting is an increasingly popular solution for businesses, content creators & digital marketers as it enhances efficiency and productivity, whist also allowing personalisation and scalability.
You can see most of the wording is relatively similar, however I have changed the structure and broken it down into shorter sentences, paragraphs and bullet points to make it easier to read for users.
Advantages of AI Content Writing
Only The Flash Character Could Write Faster than AI
As we have already demonstrated AI technology can produce content significantly faster than a human ever could. This would be extremely beneficial when needing to write content in large volume, such as for a new website.
A Research Superstar
To generate the content you have requested, AI technology can analyse data from hundreds if not thousands of resources. If you were writing a blog post and potentially spending one to two hours researching that topic in depth, you’d still only have accessed a handful of resources in comparison to what AI can research in seconds.
Deeper User Insights with AI
AI isn’t just capable of writing the content, it can analyse how users interact with existing content to ensure that what is produces is targeted to pique the interest of your target audience.
Accuracy
By analysing a topic in such volume AI can make sure that the content it produces is accurate and insightful. Plus, even the best copy writer can fall foul of a grammar error or typo everyone now and then, something AI shouldn’t do.
Disadvantages of AI content writing
AI’s Lack of Creativity and Originality
Whilst AI can produce accurate content in great volumes, all of this content is based on LLM (Large Language Models) using existing data on the web therefore it is just not capable as a human of truly original ideas. Everything it produces is based on its prior learning of datasets and other’s web content it has come across.
The creative side of content writing, which is what makes copy interesting and truly engaging, 100% requires that human touch. AI cannot (yet) exactly replicate your personality and your voice, and in our opinion AI cannot replace original blogging and content writing.
Always Quality Over Quantity
Streaming out blog post after blog post in high volumes isn’t going to do you any benefit. AI just isn’t sophisticated enough yet to produce content which is high-enough quality. For most businesses operating in a competitive market, quality content is what can help you really STAND OUT.
The Human Touch
The human touch not only is essential for creativity but only a human can reference and interpret social and cultural references accurately. AI can’t truly understand nuances of language and emotion, all which can play key roles when writing content.
Yes, AI can analyse data which references opinions on topics, but it cannot make its own opinions, that we as people, add to a blog that provides a unique perspective.
How Can AI Tools Benefit Copywriting?
Generate content ideas – AI copywriting tools like WriteSonic aren’t just for writing content, but they can help you generate ideas for blog content and more.
Research – we have already mentioned that AI can be a research superstar, so why not help you gather the most accurate and relevant research for your content to save you time. Tools like Paperguide can help you with any research activity.
Outline your content – whilst writing an entire piece of content isn’t the best use of AI it could help come up with an outline for you to expand on and add that essential human touch too.
Proof reading – we are big believers in peer reviewing and proofreading our content, but if you are strapped for time or don’t have anyone around to help you why not give it to AI to do for you.
