If you’re a fan of Google’s Lighthouse Chrome extension for help with web development, then you may like to know that Google has added an SEO Audit to their tool.

Google announced, via their blog, that you can now carry out a basic SEO Health-Check in Chrome DevTools with the Lighthouse extension.

For most web developers it is likely going to be a VERY basic SEO Tool, but Google has promised to add more enhanced features in future updates.

With my tinfoil hat, I’d wonder if Google notes where the tool is being updated/downloaded to; and I also wonder if they could use this as a way to monetise their very own SEO tool down the line – that’s just me thinking aloud though.

And if you’re wondering why Google has called it “Lighthouse” it’s to stop your website crashing on the rocks!

What is Lighthouse?

For those of you who are not aware of the Lighthouse Extension, to explain it simply, it is a fully-automated tool that provides you with a detailed analysis of the performance of your web pages, allowing you to improve the quality.

It looks at these factors:

  • Performance
  • Accessibility
  • Progressive Web Apps
  • SEO and more

It is a great tool to dig further into the performance of particular pages on your website from both technical and usability perspectives. Although, one downside is you do have to be a techy to interpret the results. So you will have to contact your web developer to implement the changes it suggests (and possibly interpret all the jargon as well)
